I took my daughter to three speech pathologists and paid over $700 for evaluations just to be told there is nothing wrong with your child. As a mother, I knew something was wrong with her speech. She was speaking in sentences and then after she turned 15 months, she stopped speaking. I reached out to Dr. Lisa and explained to her my situation and frustration. Dr. Lisa reassured me that her and I will work together to help my child. Those words alone made me breathe a sigh of relief. My 10 year old twin boys have been in speech therapy since they were 3 years old for what was diagnosed as “delayed speech." Over the past 7 years they have seen speech therapists both in school and privately and have had therapy from four different therapists. They have also been evaluated by two different psychologists for their speech delays as well. Over the years, my boys have always worked so hard practicing the “speech assignments” given to them by their speech therapists. While their speech has improved over the years, they still had trouble with certain sounds such as the “r” and “l” sounds despite hours of therapy and practicing each week. The boys began seeing Dr. Grossman for speech therapy about six weeks ago. Last week Dr. Grossman called me and suggested that I make an appointment with a specialist as she suspected that the boys’ speech difficulties may be caused by a lack of tissue under their tongues. Not only was she knowledgeable enough to recognize that this could be a problem, and to look under their tongues and notice that the skin under their tongues was shorter than is normal, she made this recommendation knowing that if she was correct she would be losing our business. She truly had my boys best interest at heart. In the seven years of speech therapy with four different therapists, not one has brought this up to me. And, sure enough, when I went to the specialist, she confirmed Dr. Grossman’s suspicions. The boys now have an appointment for a consultation with an oral surgeon to undergo a frenecotomy which is a surgical procedure to cut and release the frenulum under their skin. This will make it easier for my boys to make the sounds that they have so much trouble with because of their limited movement of their tongues. After speaking with the specialist, my boys explained that practicing their “r” sounds actually hurts! I was also told that after the surgery they will need additional therapy (not by Dr. Grossman and she knew this) to learn to work with their “new mouths”, but will be finished within a few months and will likely never need speech therapy again! This has been absolutely life changing for my boys. They will not only finally be finished with speech therapy, but they will no longer have to live with the stigma and embarrassment of “talking funny”. I am beyond grateful to Dr. Grossman. She is extremely knowledgeable and truly has the best interests of her clients at heart even if it means losing their business. And, on top of that, she is an extremely pleasant and patient therapist who my boys liked very much. I just wish we met Dr. Grossman years ago! S.C. - Parkland, FL
